How to start a boxing glove brand: costs, MOQs and steps

Starting a boxing glove brand is cheaper and faster than most founders expect, if you plan the range, the budget and the samples properly. This guide uses real FOB prices from our 2026 price list, a worked first-order budget and the checks buyers often skip, so you can launch with 60 pairs instead of 600.

The plan at a glance

How to start a boxing glove brand in 9 steps

Each step links to the detail below. As a guide, most brands go from idea to first stock in three to four months.

  1. Pick a niche

Decide who the gloves are for: fitness boxers, gym sparring, juniors, women or premium leather buyers.

  2. Set price tiers

Map a good, better and best glove to real FOB prices and the retail price your customer pays.

  3. Budget the first order

Add samples, packaging, freight, duty and launch costs to the FOB price.

  4. Secure the brand

File your trademark, then decide logo methods, packaging and barcodes.

  5. Write the tech pack

Materials, foam, weights, colours, logo placement, labels and packaging in one document.

  6. Brief suppliers

Send the same tech pack to your shortlist and compare MOQs, FOB prices and sampling.

  7. Sample and approve

Check each sample against the spec and approve one "golden sample" for bulk.

  8. Label and ship

Meet origin marking and chemical rules for your market, inspect, then book freight.

  9. Launch and sell

Start in one or two channels and reorder what sells.

To start a boxing glove brand you need a clear customer, a small range at the right price points, a written specification, a factory that samples it properly, and enough budget to land the stock and sell it. You don't need a warehouse full of gloves: with a 20-pair minimum per design, a first order of three designs is 60 pairs.

The short version

Our worked example (three designs × 20 pairs, shipped by air) comes to about $3,000 all-in for a US launch, including samples, packaging, freight, duty, photos and a trademark filing. The gloves are $968.20 of that. Replace our assumptions with your own quotes.

Choose a niche for your boxing glove brand

"Boxing gloves" is not a niche. Big brands own the generic search terms and the gym walls. New brands win by serving one group of buyers better than anyone else:

  • Fitness boxing: light velcro gloves in 10–12 oz, bold colourways, easy to put on alone.
  • Gym sparring: 14–16 oz gloves with multi-layer foam that hold their shape.
  • Juniors: 8 oz gloves for smaller hands. Check the children's product rules first (see compliance).
  • Women's range: a better-fitting hand compartment and colourways designed for women.
  • Premium leather: cowhide lace-ups or special-stitch gloves for experienced boxers.
  • Club and team gloves: gloves in a gym's or fight team's colours, sold through the club.

Write one sentence that defines your customer, the main use and the price they pay, for example "16 oz sparring gloves for amateur boxers, retail $60–$80". Material, foam, packaging and channel all follow from it.

Set good, better and best price tiers

The two things that move the factory price are the outer material and the foam construction. Lace-up and velcro versions of the same build cost the same. Here is how our published FOB prices map to tiers.

Black velcro boxing gloves with orange piping, a typical good-tier fitness glove

Good: the velcro volume glove

FOB from $7.47 / pair

Synthetic outer, machine-cut foam and a wide strap: the glove for fitness classes, bundles and your lowest price point.

Orange lace-up boxing gloves with black thumb, a better-tier sparring glove

Better: the multi-layer training glove

FOB from $14.47 / pair

Hand-layered foam gives better shock absorption and a flatter punching feel. Often a brand's best-selling sparring glove.

Best: the hero glove

FOB $19.47–$34.47 / pair

Cowhide or special-stitch construction with shaped panels: the glove you photograph for your homepage and price above the market.

Margin check (rule of thumb)

Many consumer brands aim for a retail price of roughly three to four times landed cost, leaving room for marketing, marketplace fees, returns and a future wholesale margin. If your customer's price doesn't leave that room, move down a tier or rethink the channel.

How much does it cost to make boxing gloves? A worked launch budget

The FOB price is only the start. FOB (Free On Board) means the factory delivers the goods, cleared for export, onto your carrier in Pakistan. You then pay freight, insurance, import duty and clearance. See how FOB and other Incoterms work before you compare quotes.

Import duty: US vs UK on the same order

Boxing gloves are classified by their outer material, not as sports equipment, so leather and synthetic gloves pay different rates. Rates as of 10 October 2026:

Import duty on the example order in the US and UK
DesignFOB valueUS rateUS dutyUK duty
1: synthetic leather (3926.20)$189.403% + 10% = 13%$24.620% (DCTS)
2: synthetic leather (3926.20)$289.403% + 10% = 13%$37.620% (DCTS)
3: cowhide leather (4203.21)$489.404.9% + 10% = 14.9%$72.920% (DCTS)
Total$968.20$135.16$0

US: general rate from the USITC tariff schedule plus the 10% Section 301 duty on products of Pakistan entered from 24 July 2026 (CBP CSMS #69326983), plus small processing fees. UK: 0% under the DCTS Enhanced Preferences with valid proof of origin; without it the UK Global Tariff (8% leather, 6% plastics) applies. Confirm your classification with a customs broker.

Shipped to the UK, the same order lands at about $1,748 before VAT (≈ $29.14 a pair). Import VAT of 20% on the value including freight (about $320 here) can normally be reclaimed by a VAT-registered business. EU buyers also pay 0% duty on Pakistan-origin gloves under GSP+. See all markets in our duty rates by country.

On a small order, freight and fixed fees drive the per-pair cost: air freight alone adds about $9 a pair here. Many brands launch by air, prove the range sells, then move reorders to sea freight.

Branding and packaging for private label boxing gloves

Lock in the brand before you pay to print it. Search the trademark databases in the countries where you'll sell and file before you order boxes, so you don't have to rebrand after launch.

On the glove, our standard options are custom colours (shell, palm, cuff, piping and stitching), sublimation printing for full-colour graphics, custom design developed into a sample, and custom packaging. If you have another branding method in mind, tell us your requirement and we'll confirm feasibility for your material.

  • Logo placement: the back of the hand and the cuff show best in photos. Keep a one-colour logo version for small placements.
  • Packaging: a printed box sells better on a shelf and in unboxing videos; a polybag with a hang tag keeps cost and shipping volume down for gym orders.
  • Inserts: care instructions, a weight guide and a QR code to your store.
  • Barcodes: retailers and marketplaces generally require GTIN barcodes. Get them before you print.
  • Marketplace rules: share Amazon's or your marketplace's current packaging and labelling requirements at the brief stage.

What a boxing glove tech pack contains

A tech pack is the written specification a factory quotes, samples and produces against. The clearer it is, the fewer sample rounds you pay for. A PDF with drawings, reference photos and a table is enough.

Sections of a boxing glove tech pack
SectionWhat to specify
Style overviewStyle name and code, closure (lace-up or velcro), intended use, reference photos
WeightsWeights (8–16 oz) and quantity per weight
MaterialsOuter (stiff synthetic, PU, buffalo, cowhide), palm (e.g. mesh panel), lining, thread
FoamMachine-cut or multi-layer; where padding should be firmer or softer
ColourwaysColour per panel (shell, palm, cuff, thumb, piping, stitching) with Pantone references
BrandingVector logo files (AI, PDF or SVG), method, position and size in mm for each placement
LabelsOrigin marking ("Made in Pakistan"), weight, care, batch or style code
PackagingBox or polybag, print files, inserts, barcodes, units per carton, carton marks

CommercialsQuantities, target FOB price, delivery window, Incoterm

No tech pack yet? Send a photo of a glove you like and a sentence about your customer, and we'll build the specification with you at the consultation stage. Our private label process explains each step.

Boxing gloves MOQ: what 20 pairs per design gets you

Our minimum order is 20 pairs per design for boxing gloves, MMA gloves, hand wraps, easy wraps, focus mitts, strike paddles and drum mitts. A design is one construction, material and colourway with your branding. Sialkot supplier websites we reviewed in October 2026 advertised MOQs from about 5 to over 100 pairs per design, so always ask exactly what an MOQ covers.

Twenty pairs is enough to test a design without tying up cash. If you want several weights in one design, tell us your split when you ask for a quote and we'll confirm how the MOQ applies. Two common starting splits:

Example weight splits for a 20-pair design
Range typeExample split of 20 pairsWhy
Fitness / bag gloves6 × 10 oz, 8 × 12 oz, 6 × 14 ozBag and pad work for a wide range of users
Sparring gloves4 × 14 oz, 16 × 16 oz16 oz is the most common gym sparring requirement

Compare constructions on our boxing gloves manufacturer page. If your brand also covers MMA, the same 20-pair MOQ applies to private label MMA gloves (FOB $9.47–$19.47).

Sampling rounds and what to check on a glove sample

Never go to bulk without approving a physical sample. As a guide, most glove projects need one to three rounds: a prototype for construction, fit and feel; a revised sample fixing colours, logo or padding; and a pre-production ("golden") sample, the signed-off reference that bulk is made and inspected against. Keep it.

Glove samples in Sialkot typically take one to three weeks per round, plus courier time. With us, sample cost and timing are confirmed in writing at the specification stage, and production starts only after you approve the sample.

Sample checklist

  • Weight: weigh each glove against the label and your agreed tolerance.
  • Stitching: straight, even lines, no skipped stitches, reinforced thumb and cuff seams.
  • Fit: a wrapped hand slides in easily and closes into a fist around the grip bar.
  • Padding: even knuckle coverage, no hard spots or gaps between foam layers.
  • Closure: velcro length and grip, or lace eyelets that won't tear out.
  • Materials: outer, palm and lining match the spec, with no glue marks or cracks.
  • Branding: Pantone match, logo position and size, print sharpness and rub resistance.
  • Symmetry: left and right gloves match in shape, colour and logo position.
  • Packaging: box fit, print quality and barcode scans.

Photograph each issue against a ruler or scale and send one consolidated list. For a full inspection checklist, see samples and quality control in our import guide.

Compliance and labelling basics

Glove rules aren't complicated, but they differ by market. These are the basics to put in your tech pack; they aren't legal advice.

  • Origin marking (US): imported goods must be marked legibly and permanently with the English name of the country of origin, e.g. "Made in Pakistan" (19 CFR 134.11). Use a sewn-in label, not just the box.
  • Leather chemistry (EU): under REACH, leather that touches the skin may contain no more than 3 mg/kg of chromium VI (Regulation (EU) 301/2014). Ask for a lab report on leather gloves for Europe. The UK has equivalent rules under UK REACH; confirm current limits with your test lab.
  • EU product safety: the General Product Safety Regulation requires an economic operator established in the EU, plus manufacturer details and a type or batch number on the product (Regulation (EU) 2023/988).
  • Children's gloves (US): products designed mainly for children aged 12 and under need third-party testing and a Children's Product Certificate (CPSC).
  • California: check whether Proposition 65 warnings apply to your products.
Competition approval is a separate project

Sanctioned bouts use gloves approved by the governing body or athletic commission. New York State, for example, publishes an approved boxing gloves list. A new private label glove is a training and sparring glove: don't call it "competition approved" unless a model has actually been approved.

Where to sell your gloves

Start with one or two channels you can serve well. Each has different margin, content and packaging needs.

Sales channels for a new boxing glove brand
ChannelWhy it worksWatch out for
Gyms and coachesDirect feedback, word of mouth, repeat orders for classesGyms expect trade pricing
Your own store (e.g. Shopify)Full margin and your own customer dataYou pay to bring every visitor; content must be strong
Amazon and marketplacesExisting buyer traffic and fulfilment optionsReferral and fulfilment fees, price competition, strict labelling rules
Wholesale to retailersLarger orders and shelf presenceThey need their own margin, so your landed cost must be low
Clubs and fight teamsBranded runs in team colours, a ready-made communityEvent deadlines; plan production early

Whatever the channel, invest in clean photos, a weight guide and honest specs (material, foam type, closure). Buyers compare specs, and many competing listings don't give them.

Mistakes to avoid when you start a boxing gear brand

  • Too many SKUs: five colours in five weights spreads your budget thin. Start with three designs.
  • A vague spec: "black glove with my logo" costs you extra sample rounds. Specify foam, materials, Pantones and logo sizes.
  • Skipping the sample: it's the cheapest place to find a problem; bulk is the most expensive.
  • Budgeting only the FOB price: freight, duty, fees and samples can double the cost of a small first order.
  • Printing before trademarking: rebranding after a dispute costs far more than a filing.
  • The wrong weight mix: a sparring range without 16 oz gloves won't suit most boxing gyms.
  • Over-claiming: "pro", "certified" or "competition approved" claims you can't back up create returns and legal risk.
  • Forgetting origin labels: missing marking can delay US customs clearance.

FAQ

Starting a boxing glove brand: questions

How much does it cost to start a boxing glove brand?

In our worked example, three designs of 20 pairs cost $968.20 FOB. Samples, packaging, air freight, US duty, broker fees, photos and a trademark filing bring the total to about $3,000. The non-glove figures are assumptions, so use your own quotes. Cheaper constructions or sea freight lower the total.

What is the MOQ for private label boxing gloves?

At ForgeSports it's 20 pairs per design. Sialkot supplier websites we reviewed advertised from about 5 to over 100 pairs per design, so ask each supplier exactly what its MOQ covers: a colourway, a weight or a construction.

How much does it cost to make a pair of boxing gloves?

Our FOB prices run from $7.47 a pair (stiff synthetic, machine-cut foam) to $24.47 (cowhide, multi-layer foam) for lace-up and velcro gloves, and $19.47–$34.47 for special-stitch gloves. Freight, duty and fees add to the landed cost, especially on small orders.

How long does it take to launch a boxing glove brand?

As a guide, three to four months: a few weeks of planning, one to three sample rounds of one to three weeks each, typically three to six weeks of bulk production, then freight. We confirm timelines in writing at the specification stage.

Do I need a trademark before I order gloves?

It's strongly recommended. Search the trademark databases in your sales markets and file before you print logos and packaging, so you don't invest in branding you might have to change.

Which glove weights should a new brand stock?

For adults, 12, 14 and 16 oz cover most needs. 16 oz is the most common gym sparring requirement, and 10–12 oz suits bag work and fitness classes. Add 8 oz for juniors after checking your market's children's product rules.

Can I sell private label gloves for competition use?

Not automatically. Sanctioned bouts require gloves approved by the governing body or athletic commission. Sell new private label gloves for training and sparring, and treat competition approval as a separate project.
